Poison The Well, Brighton Barfly, 10th April

Poison the Well

I went to see these guys for the first time last week, and unfortunately for everyone, they decided to play the Brighton Barfly, probably the worst venue in Brighton.

My worst fears were confirmed from the outset, with the sound simply cutting out for one of the guitarists during the 2nd song of the set for a good few minutes. the band were good about it, telling jokes, and getting some audience participation on the go to try and fill the ever-dragging silence.

Song 3 goes off without too many problems before the sound cuts out again for the next song.

It’s all a bit shit in terms of sound. All the melodic vocals simply can’t be heard, particularly evident in Nerdy, which they predictably close the set with.

It’s hard to fault the band though. Bags of energy on stage, tight rhythms, nice guitar work and brilliant vocals (when you could hear them).

Just avoid the Barfly….

Coheed & Cambria, Brixton Academy, 8th Feb 08

Coheed & CambriaDespite their most recent album being a bit shit, I was still really excited to see Coheed again after so long. My favourite band for a long time, I love the concept behind the albums and the way there are signature musical phrases that are repeated in each, but in slightly different ways. It’s just nice to see a rock band trying to do something a little bit clever I suppose.

Anyway, back to the gig.
The sound was pretty shitty for Brixton. The bass fuelled speakers shook like your grandmother’s vibrator on a cold saturday night while she watches late night quiz shows that you have to have lost all of your brain cells from years of drug abuse to even think of participating in.

Keep reading after the jump…
